In Memoriam: Mrs. Lutie Hailey Walcott, Real Daughter of the Confederacy

I wrote about the Confederate Home of Ardmore, Oklahoma back in October of last year, with full intention of revisiting the subject at a later date, and of reporting back to you, dear reader, with a follow-up article containing additional information I have since collected relevant to the home’s erection in 1910. Part and parcel of that investigation also involved identifying, and learning something about, key persons who were most responsible for the home’s erection at its location in Ardmore at that time. Herein is the (belated) fulfilment of my original intention, delayed for no other reason than my tendency at times to procrastination.

As it so happens, my wife and I were in Ardmore on business errands recently. Between which errands we also made time and took the opportunity to pay a visit to the old Confederate Home (now named Oklahoma Veteran’s Home), as well as Rose Hill Cemetery, not far away, wherein the remains of the main subject of this little write-up, Mrs. Lutie Mary Hailey Walcott (pictured above), are interred.

The following, in bold type, is excerpted from A Brief History, Oklahoma Confederate Home, Ardmore, Oklahoma, which document I downloaded in pdf format some months back from the Oklahoma Historical Society database. The photos inserted throughout the remainder of the article were taken by me during our visit of the several sites in question.

A Brief History, Oklahoma Confederate Home, Ardmore, Oklahoma On August  3rd,  1909,  the  Board  met  in  Oklahoma  City  for  the  purpose  of  acting  on  the  report  of  the locating  committee,  and  after  due  deliberation  the  Board  endorsed  the  recommendation  of  the committee  and  located  the  Home  at  Ardmore.   After  the  location  had  been  settled  upon,  the  chairman appointed  D.  M.  Hailey,  R.  A.  Sneed  and  J.  R.  Pulliam  a  committee  to  make  a  selection  from  the  several sites  offered  by  the  City  of  Ardmore  upon  which  to  build  the  home.

The  committee  after  examination  first  selected  the  40 acre  tract  known  as  the  Felix  West  property  near the  Lorena  Park  as  the  most  suitable  place  for  the  Home;  but  upon  investigation,  they  were  not  satisfied with  the  title,  and  accepted  a  tract  of  23  and  3/5  acres  donated  by  Mrs.  Lutie  Hailey  Walcott  situated  in what  is  known  as  the  Walcott  addition  to  the  City  of  Ardmore  and  about  one quarter  of  a  mile  from  the city  limits,  upon  which  land  the  Confederate  Home  now  stands.

On the  front  of  our  Home  was  placed  a  marble  tablet  upon  which  appears  this  inscription:  Enshrined  in  the  hearts  of  all  friends  of  this  institution,  is  the  memory  of  Mrs.  Lutie  Hailey  Walcott,  who donated  the  land  to  this  Home.

Marble tablet alluded to in the document

Mrs. Lutie Hailey Walcott was the daughter of Dr. Daniel Morris Hailey (1841-1919) and Mrs. Helen Marr McCarty Hailey (1851-1924).

Daniel Morris Hailey is the same “D. M. Hailey,” named in the above extract as having been appointed a member of the three-man committee formed for the special purpose of selecting, from the several locations offered by the City of Ardmore, the site upon which to build the Confederate Home pictured in the predecessor to this article. Here is a photo of the building I took during our recent visit to the site:

Mr. Hailey was also the man for whom the town of Haileyville, OK was named. His obituary states that he was a soldier in Co. A, 8th Louisiana Infantry, CSA, serving throughout the entirety of the war from 1861-65, and under General Stonewall Jackson’s command during the early part of the war. He later served as Commander of the Oklahoma Division of the United Confederate Veterans, of which organization he remained an active member in the years he was not serving as the chapter’s commander.

Mrs. Lutie M. Hailey Walcott was the wife of Arthur Walcott. To their union were born the following six children: Mrs. Helen H. Walcott Wood; Jessie Olive Walcott (who seems to have died in infancy); Marjorie M. Walcott; D. Hailey Walcott; Lutie Tom Walcott and Mrs. Guilda Mar Walcott Jones.

Here is a photo I took of the UDC’s grave marker memorializing Mrs. Walcott as a Real Daughter of the Confederacy:

Mrs. Walcott’s gravesite was surprisingly easy to locate amongst some 16,000 graves; the UDC marker adorning her grave, which I was of course specifically keeping an eye out for, was a dead giveaway from a distance of roughly fifty yards.

  1. Interesting, our history must be preserved and then taught. Where is our history collectively stored? I know of some sites here and there, but do we have a central place where our history is preserved, a library of our history, artifacts and culture? If so is it in our hands? I read an account of someone running a Confederate museum in Tennessee for example, he not only was hostile to.the South, he was a Yankee!

I have been worrying more and more about this as of late we all know Sherman burned every record he could find and I think it will be even worse this time around. We need to branch out into other countries and have store houses of our records and history.

I worry about a great deal lately, like how to pay for anything, not just on a personal level, but collectively as a people. Where are our record revenue streams? We don’t have a presence in banking or the Stock market. We don’t have any advocacy groups, no political party, no….. well anything. We have nothing. What can we do to change that? I have a few ideas, but without funds I can’t even begin to start. So we need to preserve our history, like the one example you just posted and to do that we need further ding and full time advocates that are paid. We all just do it for free, but free don’t cut it. We need revenue streams and we need to use it to fund our advocacy, education and historical preservation, I guess it goes without saying they must be outside of the governments control. Thanks for sharing this part of our history.

    1. The answer I believe you are looking for is asymmetric warfare. It comes down to us being smart and putting our thinking caps on for as long as it takes. It is better to use smarter tactics than to have a lot of money anyway because a money supply can always be cut off and the advocacy starves. If we are decentralized (impossible to defeat via decapitation) and only need a micro-budget (cannot be starved) then we are in a better position to win in the long run.

  2. Dear Michael,

Thanks, as always, for the thoughtful comments. I don’t think I have an answer for the dilemma you raise that would satisfy you, but I will say that the history of our people is still extant, and that all we need to do is to search it out and dig it up, then transmit that knowledge and information to our children. Meanwhile, there is absolutely no reason that any Southerner should put himself in competition with the public school system and its teachers/administrators, who are of course the avowed and mortal enemies of true Southern History. In that vein, I have an anecdote to share with you:

I have a younger brother, also named Michael. He has several kids, all of whom attend the public schools. Two of my boys and I were at his house visiting one day no too long ago when the subject of secession came up. We agreed that to secede from the Yankee nation was/is in our best interest, as well as theirs. In our conversation, however, my brother mentioned that the one thing he held against our Southron forbears was the institution of slavery; he said that our forefathers and mothers were “idiots” for bringing blacks here to begin with, and that we are having to suffer for their stupidity in having done so, with no concern about how it would affect their posterity (you and me) in the future. I quickly began to set him straight as to the actual history as to how the slaves got here, vs. the Yankee revisionist history on the subject he learned in the public schools. After no more than probably fifteen minutes of my correcting his ‘take,’ you could see his demeanor change to anger, and he said to me, “you know, that really pisses me off!; they don’t teach kids that in the schools.” I simply replied, “well, no, and they’re never going to teach that in the public schools, Michael; they wouldn’t do so if they knew that history, which they don’t. But I can tell you this, everything I’ve just explained to you either one of these boys (my boys) could have explained to you just as easily and thoroughly. Why? Because I make it my business to teach it to them myself, and to never allow their minds to be polluted by the public schools. Not voluntarily, anyway.”

In all of that I was mostly citing Dr. Dabney from his book, A Defense of Virginia, and the South, wherein he proves that African slaves and slavery was forced upon the South, first by the mother country, then by Yankees, who carried on the African slave trade long after “mother England” got a conscience about it and self-righteously began to rail against our forbears for carrying on the institution of slavery. And all the while, the South was being forced into this kicking and screaming. And as I also told my brother during the same conversation when he complained that our forbears should have freed the slaves as soon as they were landed on Southern soil, “I won’t hold my breath waiting for you to come up with a viable way that could have been done under the circumstances without the rapid and utter annihilation of the race on this continent, in which case there truly would be cause to think of our ancestors as “evil.””

Thanks for the comments, again. Here is a link to Dr. Dabney’s book aforementioned: https://a.co/cUNGqVC

  3. Thank you so very much sir, I will be sure to read it. Does it detail the Jewish influence as well? I was shocked once when I read that if a slave auction was held on a Jewish Holiday it had to be cancelled because there was nobody left to run it! I have several black friends that find it hard to believe Jews have so much to do with their history in the South, such as how Martin Luther was a Marxist and all of the words they think are his were written by a Marxist Jew, his speech writer, who was also found guilty of funneling money from the Soviets to the Communist Party of America, for instance. Same for the NAACP which was a Jewish organization, completely ran and funded by Yankee Marxist Jews. Even now a black leader by the name of Nick Cannon recently questioned Jewish influence on air, the next time I checked in on him he was sitting with a Rabbi reading a book on anti-Semitism 😂 I know some of the story, but I don’t know if there are any publications on the Jewish influence on the South that is not written by a shill or a “judeo-christian”. Until recently when Pendrag Martin informed me that a Jew ran off with the Confederacy’s money, basically costing us the war or that they completely took over our Treasury department, or how they took over the kkk causing Nathan Bedford to disband it. But, as I keep stating, its hard for me to find our history or know what is true or lies written by Yankees and their collaborators. When talking to my black friends its hard for me to cite things, I don’t remember how I know half the things I do and would find a centralized place where all of our understanding, not filtered through the lens of apologists and Yankee lies could be referenced by us.

I often shock people when I say if a Southerner was standing in a room with a Yankee, a black man, a Jew and a European, that the Southerner would be by far the least likely to have ever owned a slave, I say again, by far the least likely.

I speak to an international audience on GAB, and its hard for them to break out of the brainwashing that Yankees have spent untold amounts of money to spread to the rest of the world, even though they are usually pretty far right themselves, they have just never heard any version of us than the Yankee one. I find it hard to get through sometimes because I don’t have sources to cite that are readily available for me in any organized manner. I did not even know my own history most of my life and just went off of instinct, if I knew it, then I just knew it and would argue until I fell out. But, having somewhere centralized would go a long way for me and others who advocate our positions to people. I find myself just stating things that I can not remember the source of anymore and finding our history written by us without digging forever to find references is a chore to say the least.

Speaking of Gab have you made your account there yet? Some of the authors from here are there already, it truly is the last safe space for Christians and free speech. They are constantly under attack from terrorist organizations like the ADL who cannot abide a space for speech they do not control. The founder is a die hard Christian, who is very savvy about what is really occurring in our nation and is not scared in the least, he can’t even find a bank to take his money, that is how scared the left is of Gab. So we are going to build our own banks, phones, TV devices and all of the rest, he already has prototypes of the phone and TV devices, he calls it a true Christian economy, as he is as sick of the secular Christians as we all are. I am in a homeschooling group there with 50,000 members expressly for the purpose of linking a SCV curriculum I dug up online one day, but I feel you could probably do better. Its a really exciting time to be there and its much easier to communicate there than clogging up people’s comments sections here 😂

So yes, I would love to know more of our history but finding sources I can trust to be from here and not Yankees or their Southern apologists can be hard. I think its something we desperately need, but until we start funding each other, on a personal level and an organizational level, then I am afraid we will continue to lose ground. I sacrifice my personal life to learn and help us fight, but I should get paid to do it just as my counter parts on the left do, or I just can’t continue. I want to create things that I would use for us, like the archive I was talking about, but without money nothing is possible. Our current financial model of standing around with our hand out to the poorest people in the country is failure incarnate. What Torba over at Gab is doing now, trying to build a purely Christian economy outside of what he calls the “demon controlled” economy of the West is what I propose we do in the South, to have our own I met economic base outside of the control of Yankees, reconstructed clowns and other assorted demons.

All of that may seem off topic, but its not. All of the need I see for the things I would like to do all come back to funding them and myself while I make them. Unfortunately while I may be ok in other areas, finance is not one of them, every time I try and get my head around it I become so disgusted with how everything is set up and run that I can’t motivate myself to care and end up instead thinking about how it SHOULD work, not how it actually does, as is my nature. Not good I know, but still true.

Anyway, just some things to consider and I look forward to seeing you on Gab in the future. My account there is @TheRougarou, although I mostly just repost stuff I find on my timeline, its much easier to speak there than comments sections here. It also where I post most articles from here, the one recently written by Pendrag Martin about National Socialism for instance was wildly popular and I have linked to it in many of my discussions there. So looking forward to seeing your there.

    1. Does it detail the Jewish influence as well?

My recollection is that Dabney mentions the Jews in relation to the infamous slave trade only in passing; I don’t recall that he details it. I could be wrong; it’s been several years since I first read the book. Which reminds that I need to read it again. But, as my good friend, Prof. Smith, has said before, “Dabney is strong meat on this subject, as he is on so many others.” His treatment of the self-righteous, puritanical, money-grubbing Yankee is harsh. As well it should be.
