Two Cheers for Sportsball

One element of the Dissident Right I never liked is the “f— sportsball” crowd, i.e. the people who argue vigorously that sports are damaging to the West thanks to its promotion of degeneracy. I had several issues with it, one being that, yes, I am a fan of sports, but even beyond that I thought their message, even to what merit it had, was off-putting and did more to push normal people away rather than help them think about what they are spending their money to support. Richard Spencer’s appearance at Auburn University comes to mind here, as he lost whatever crowd may have been on the fence the moment he went after football on the campus of an SEC school. “We had great success tonight in Auburn, AL” he tweeted later. Yeah, telling a roomful of Southerners about how much you hate football and how bad they are for liking it, and then making it out of the city alive, is pretty impressive. And, there was no way of getting around that I felt a lot of the people making this argument were still angry that the football players got more girls than they did in high school.

This is not to say I saw absolutely zero merit in what they were arguing, we all know people whose emotional wellbeing is far too tied into how well their favorite team is doing, but I thought it was a point they were overstating and presenting poorly. However, then came the George Floyd riots of 2020 and it was hard to dismiss them anymore, as sports teams were, more or less, blackmailing the country into going along with the riots. For example, think about the sheer amount of SEC coaches that joined in or how Willie O’Ree, the first black player in the NHL, has been elevated to near cult status despite spending the vast majority of his career in the minor leagues and the NHL never being segregated (it was all-white because it was, at the time, virtually all-Canadian which was itself almost all-white). Then, there was Mississippi which had a special session of her legislature to rid the state flag of the Confederate battle emblem after the Ole Miss and Mississippi State football teams threatened a boycott.

Even before all that, there was a litany of bad behavior from some athletes that would always be swept under the rug. There was the particularly troubling case of Alabama defensive end Courtney Upshaw’s arrest after beating his girlfriend on video. The case was dropped thanks to Nick Saban, and even more disturbing was her father’s reaction. He picked Alabama football over his own daughter and came out of the courtroom yelling “Roll Tide!” There were also multiple instances of the academic rules being broken to assure that an athletically gifted, but not too bright, player would still be eligible to play.

Heritage America, and especially Dixie, took a beating I never thought I would see, and while it is true that almost every institution from the tech giants to the majority of churches joined in, it was hard to ignore the importance sports had. Despite this, I am still not willing to join the “f— sportsball” gang, even as I see more clearly what they were talking about (however poorly they were putting it). There is a reason I can only muster two cheers for sportsball, but two cheers I still can muster. Regardless, I still see great importance in sports.

The basic issue I have with “f— sportsball” is that it universalizes a problem that is, in truth, only a few decades old. For the vast majority of Western civilization, a well-rounded male was expected to be morally upright, physically strong, and studious – and all three elements were needed. If one element was gone, the person in question was no longer well-rounded, just as a three-legged stool missing one leg cannot stand up. It is only the increased specialization of the post-World War II order that this ideal was lost. Take for instance the “dumb jock” or unathletic computer nerd (unkept in his appearance and either gaunt or morbidly obese) archetypes of today and compare them with the “All-American Boy” archetype of an earlier era – at once, a great person, athlete, and student – or the barrel-chested, square jawed scientist hero of 1950s science fiction. There were, to be sure, always people who were both dumb and strong as an ox, that’s what labor intensive, menial work is for. And, there were always sickly people who were also brilliant (or, at least, educated), but these were not held up as ideal. The model was a man who was both intelligent and athletic, not to mention morally upright.

The issue with sports is not intrinsic, or else these problems would have appeared more than a few decades ago. The real issue is that sports became dislodged from its proper place as one element of a person and society at large. At some point, the elements of intelligence and morality were both jettisoned for athleticism, yet another casualty of the post-WWII fascination with specialization. It’s the same driving force that has replaced the reasonably fit and well-dressed college student of the past with the slovenly creature, either skinny as a rail or grossly overweight and clad in a Pokémon shirt, of today. In both cases, I really don’t think the problem was solidified until the 1980s or 1990s when athlete salary escalation really took off thanks to sports becoming a multi-billion dollar business and a crop of computer geeks becoming the “go to” symbol of intelligence.

The solution is not to completely abandon sports, but rather work to put sports back in its proper context. This means being sure to, when critiquing sports, drawing a line between liking sports and being obsessed with sports. Almost everyone will know someone who invests far too much money and their emotional wellbeing into sports (including “fantasy leagues”), so point to that as an example of what you are talking about, rather than a blanket condemnation of sports. Being mindful of how much money you spend on merchandise is a good idea, as well. Look at sports as a way to encourage fitness and community, rather than a good in and of itself, or worse, a source of genuine happiness.

Throughout Dixie, there are many small towns that take great pride in their high school football team, and that serves as a way to increase community involvement. The 1926 Rose Bowl is a great example of the positive, community pride building aspects of sports. When the Alabama Crimson Tide beat the Washington Huskies, for many in Dixie it was a great source of pride, as it was the long-awaited revenge on the Yankees for the War. There is a reason it is known as “The Game that Changed the South.” Moreover, I think paying greater attention to amateur, or even minor league sports, is a good idea as well, bringing the benefits of sports without its negative consequences that have emerged recently. When put in its proper place, sports have positive attributes. Sports have been a vital part of Western civilization since its origin, to completely toss that out because of recent problems is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. The Right must work to restore the balance of athleticism, intelligence, and moral fortitude that lasted for millennia, rather than double down on an inverse reaction to that problem.

Rebuilding Dixie will take men of great moral, intellectual, and physical strength and sports is a great way of establishing our future.

  1. They are not the monsters talented by far, everything is manipulated including which players coming out of high school are socio-politically (((chosen))) for the game … they are now bent on destroying the ethno Breton Canadien game of Hockey …

    1. Fraken spell checker… * monster’s should be “most”. .. but hey, spell checker may bre onto something 😉

  2. One football player at Mississippi State brought down our old Mississippi flag. The Mississippi legislature duly complied with his demand. I then wrote a letter to the athletics director at Mississippi State to inform him that Mississippi State will never get another dime from this old country boy. Two of my sons play on a homeschool baseball team and two of my daughters play on a homeschool basketball team. But I couldn’t care less about the SEC any more. The football and basketball teams are comprised primarily of thugs, and the baseball teams primarily of spoiled ‘travel ball’ punks. Goodbye and good riddance, college athletics.

  3. Once it became obvious that our beloved college football is as woke as the rest of the corporate world, I lost much of my exuberance for it this season. I have always bordered on obsession with my team, spent much money traveling to games, etc.
I do see how coll fb fandom has actually helped promote the wokeness destroying our culture, since the university is the breeding ground for such nonsense. And football has been the pull for alumni to give generously and thus finance it.
But now that college football is not longer what it was, I feel no more tie to this once-great nation.
    *sigh*

  4. It’s an interesting article, but it is important to recognize when people say “sportsball,” they usually are not criticizing all sports. Often, when people say “sportsball” they aren’t saying that concern of physical prowess or sports in general are bad (though I’m sure there are some people who do, which causes confusion when using the term). It’s primarily a tongue-in-cheek way of mocking the cult-like obsession around non-whites and other immigrants wearing local uniforms and pretending they represent your people (while simultaneously getting away with criminal activities). Though, you’re certainly correct that it probably doesn’t play well with people who like sports and because it’s not well-defined it can be misused. It’s one of those things that may be best kept to memes rather than in serious conversation.

  5. People who waste countless hours their lives watching other people play sports are bonified morons. Morons who deserve to have that fact rubbed in their faces at every opportunity. Now not just morons any longer, but primate worshipping cuck morons. F sportsball. Join a gym or a team yourself if you like sports.

    1. I’m with you on this TJ.I could care less if I offend a bunch of Black-worshipping deracinated,anti-intellectual Whites. Our ancestors were something special whether they were big and strong or thin or medium. They knew who they were and lived the lives God gave them. They did not need a silly bunch of organized spectacles taking away time they never get back.Think about it Mr.article writer, you are defending people who waste away their lives and money obsessing over primitive darkies who then use the wealth and fame you gave them to date your White daughters.Madness.I could care no less if I offend such dimwits. And that includes Nascar racing as a waste of time. How about lifting weights?Teaching Sunday School?Going on adventures with your kids?A romantic afternoon with your wife?Or for the single guys chasing after some pretty girls. But if you tell me your spend your free hours watching a horde of stinking, sweaty gyrating Blacks then be prepared to be prepared to get a White mans real opinion of what you are.God bless all here. And keep writing articles because we learn and improve from debating each other. We all can agree our goal is final victory for our people.Never give up.

      1. Think about it Mr. article writer, you are defending people who waste away their lives and money obsessing over primitive darkies who then use the wealth and fame you gave them to date your White daughters. Madness.

He’s doing nothing of the sort; he’s simply arguing that there is probably a better way of getting through to an element of these “dimwits,” as you call them, than deliberately insulting them. I’ve made the same argument many many times before, albeit not specifically with reference to the derogatory term, “sportsball.” Perhaps I can explain it better in an anecdote:

I once had a state congressman who spent the better part of his first term humbly thanking his constituents for giving him the honor of representing them in the State Congress; who then spent the bulk of his second term deliberately insulting the majority of his congressional colleagues (and about seventy percent of his constituents by extension) for their supporting our “life at conception” bill, and similar legislation. I wrote him several letters in which I explained to him the counter-intuitive, counter-productive nature of his position, and specifically his insistence on insulting his own constituents. To make matters even worse, part of his argument against the life at conception bill in particular, was founded on the fact that he had a lesbian daughter, and that his “future grandchildren,” as he referred to them, were all frozen in egg form, awaiting the day when his daughter, and her lesbian lover, should decide it were time to start their “family.” You wanna talk about “dimwits?” Right there is a prime example.

Somehow, some way, this individual in question was too stupid and too incorrigible to understand that he was alienating the very people who had elected him to represent them in the first place. This of course simply goes to show how very out of touch with reality he was, which is in no way surprising since he in fact did raise his daughter to embrace lesbianism. The point, though, is that his tactics were in fact counter-intuitive and counter-productive to what he was trying to achieve by his insults. Know what I mean?

How about lifting weights? Teaching Sunday School? Going on adventures with your kids? A romantic afternoon with your wife? Or for the single guys chasing after some pretty girls.

As far as I can tell by the contents of the article, Dixie Anon is not advocating against any of this. Indeed, I’d wager good money he is in favor of all of it and then some, but I’ll let him speak for himself on the matter. But, in any case, you can support and do all of the above, and still be a “sportsball” fan. I know; I’m one of ’em.

You should care, btw, whether you are driving people away by your insults, who are otherwise your natural allies. I understand your not caring whether you insult a certain (irredeemable) element of such people; but be careful you don’t alienate other elements your natural allies, as I said. That’s all I’m saying, and it’s all Dixie Anon is saying in the article, when you boil it all down.

        1. T.Morris thank you for your thoughtful reply to my long comment.I do agree about not offending allies(in fact coincidentally I read an article just tonight about that very subject).I watched the Atlanta Braves in the 80’s and the Utah Jazz and Boston Celtics around the same time.As a youth I even loved watching John Riggins make many touchdowns. But even at that age I was becoming aware that sports were a tool used against us(I wasn’t aware of the huge percentage of Jew ownership in NFL,NBA,MLB etc till later).I have overheard many a convo of White men discussing this or that Negro player and whether said mudman’s hamstring was healed and when would he be able to play.It sickened me then and does today. And watching White men and White females yell and shout to the heavens over some spindly legged Black heading to the endzone with his cornrows falling down his back makes me want to vomit. How Sir can I consider such pathetic, lost souls my people? They sicken me as much as the Negroids.Let me just say this, our victory will NOT come from hoping such useless nothings wake up.It will and can only come from God,and it will come.I believe. You and I Mr T.Morris cannot even comprehend how God will bring this about but he will.We must be resolute till the final victory and not pin our hopes on those lost Whites who worship their Black athletes, their pro-homo,deracinated country music stars or even their anti-White,Yankee Nascar drivers who hate our heritage.Sir I do see your point,I do.But I will never understand Whites who get crapped in their faces yet continue to watch that TV screen or attend those games.Useless fools and my opinion on that will never change.God bless you and do not take anything I said to be an attack on your opinion. But I speak from the heart and will not do otherwise no matter what anyone thinks.

  6. F–k sportsball, James LaFond is right it’s just a cucked version of something tribal and real from the past.

  7. Not sure what happened with the last few sentences of my comment but I did not make those errors(like be prepared to be prepared) and a wrote a real White mans opinion not a White mans real opinion.I’m very careful when writing so I don’t know what could have occurred there.I think we can all agree computers suck.
