“Now is the winter of our discontent” is a famous line from William Shakespeare’s Richard III, but this is not a review, nor dissertation on that poetic work. Rather, it is an expression of a general feeling when engaging those in the Dissident Right, and more exclusively Southern Nationalists.
In the last week, many in Dixie have been somewhat overwhelmed with the bite of winter. Not that we don’t regularly have cold weather, snow, or ice in the South, we do. However, those particular attributes of Old Man Winter rarely last more than a day or two, not a full week of sub-freezing temperatures, and the blessings of eight plus inches of snow lingering on the ground, as was my fortune. Roads shut down, entire cities and towns made immobile by all sorts of frozen conditions is more than an inconvenience in Dixie. To be honest, prolonged periods are miserable to most Southerners, although it’s all to the delight and entertainment to those north of us.
Winter is generally thought of as the end of the seasons, the last cycle in the process, but it’s actually the beginning. Just as in your Bible, during the days of creation, everything starts with darkness and then light, or evening and morning. We think of work and then rest, but actually it is the opposite, with rest coming first, then work. Even the most exciting part of the Gospel story begins with death, or for our purposes, winter, and then resurrection.
It’s very natural to get the winter blues, as the skies can be gray and cold. There is less light, for the days are shorter this time of year. The ground freezing, and no hint of spring in the air, can make one very discontent. But this is the most important time in the growing cycle. For out of view from all those who merely enjoy the fruits of the harvest, all those things necessary for new life in the spring and summer are happening. Between the ice, the snow, and the rain, our soil is preparing for a fruitful time of planting and harvesting.
Right now, we are in the winter of our discontent, wanting the springtime of freedom to burst forth in splendid beauty, but that must wait. We must allow our Heavenly Father to prepare the soil in His good time, as we work, doing those things which He has instructed us to do in anticipation of that which is to come.
While the bitterness of winter has been upon us, we, the heirs of the Confederacy and of the last vestiges of Christendom in North America, have been doing that vital work necessary to bring about an awakening in the garden which is our people. And as it appears from very recent events, it may be about to burst into springtime. Our discontent is just about over.
Even now, there are signs of our long-awaited resurrection, as the governor of Texas is defying the edict of the imperial government, and it seems his boldness is inspiring Southern leaders in other states to come to the aid of their sister. I just watched a video from the Republican governor of Louisiana reminding the federal government that the states are sovereign.
As I finish writing this article, governors all over the South, and governors from areas that our people settled during the diaspora after the War, are rising in defiance of this despotic federal leviathan. Perhaps this is just a glimpse of spring, a preview, just as warmer temperatures will be gracing our lands next week. But perhaps our winter is coming to an end, and if it is, there will be much to do. So, as you finish your winter rest, my brothers and sisters, be ready to rise from this soil well prepared, and come forth into the freedom that our ancestors prayed and fought to bring into our land.
Deo Vindice!
God bless Texas!
Service to God and honor to the South.
A well written article. Long live the Republic!.
This is an important message. Too easy to get mesmerized by the bad things. It’s hard to have hope, but it is essential. It is the fuel that makes the fight possible for the long haul.
Love articles like these. Great work, Dabney. You have a gift with edifying writing.
