Italy is a country with the world’s highest number of world heritage sites, yet often finishes low on the list of best places for doing business. Historically Italy has sent millions abroad throughout Europe and the Americas, forming one of the world’s largest diaspora networks, yet today has one of the highest net immigrations in Europe from places like Asia and the Middle East. Centered at the crossroads of the Occident and the Orient, the saying ‘all roads lead to Rome’ has presented both promise in the case of the Silk Road and subsequent wealth generated during the Renaissance and the perils posed by transmission of disease with the Black Plague and now the Coronavirus first entering Europe through Italy.
